Dance

Violin & Piano

Composed in 2008.

Dance is constructed from two melodic ideas, one more rhythmically distinctive, the other more melodically distinctive. Yet these distinctive features are not necessarily what define these melodic ideas and it becomes apparent that their tone and character can be altered quite persuasively while keeping their ‘skeleton’ intact. Simultaneously, the interaction between the melodies as distinctive musical entities is explored, this process not only affecting changes on the melodies directly but also producing new musical material from their fusion. Thus, the underlying premise of the work is unity. Rhythm is the catalyst.
