Irish Times review: Concorde – Up Close with Music

Irish Times review: Concorde - Up close with musicMichael Dervan’s review of Concorde’s recent gig featuring my composition Begin was published in the Irish Times on last week.

It opened with the premiere of Begin, a setting for soprano, flute, clarinet and cello by Donal Rafferty of Brendan Kennelly’s poem (which was read out but copies weren’t provided).

It’s a sweet, essentially tonal response to the text, with bright colouring from the four players, none of whom scarcely stops throughout.

You can read the full review on the Irish Times page.

Upcoming premiére by Concorde

UpClosewithConcorde

The Irish contemporary music ensemble Concorde have announced details of their upcoming 2011/12 concert season, and it’s a special one, celebrating 35 years! They have six major concerts planned around Dublin, each featuring a new commission by an Irish composer. Details and dates are over on the Events page and on IMRO.

Their first concert on Sunday 13 November 2011 at the Rubicon Gallery, Stephen’s Green, will feature the premiére of my song-setting of Begin, a poem by Brendan Kennelly. I have re-worked the original version for mezzo-soprano and piano for mezzo-soprano, flute (+ alto flute), clarinet in A, and cello.

My music will be featured along with a new commission by Irish composer Dave Flynn. Admission is FREE so do come along and listen.
