Hear | Per Nørgård: Symphony No. 3

My discovery of Danish composer Per Nørgård in the last year (thanks to Rob Keeley!) has been a real breath of fresh air in terms of thinking about contemporary classical music. Born in 1932, he is the latest in a line of distinguished 20th century Danish composers, a student of Vagn Holmboe, who in turn began training at the Royal Danish Academy of Music at Copenhagen under the recommendation of that giant of Danish music – Carl Nielsen. His interest in incorporating music and mathematical ideas together (he discovered the ‘infinity series‘) is something which interests me greatly. You can read learn about him on the very informative Per Nørgård official website (in English).
